Abstract

During the first PJP (Period of Joint Planning), various fundamental issues hindering the improvement of living standards and welfare were successfully addressed, laying a strong foundation for the next phase of development. The economic report of the Special Region of Aceh in 1996 provides an overview of the region's economy during that year. The main issues discussed include economic growth, inflation, foreign trade, and rice production. The report highlights the role, growth, and production of the agricultural sector, manufacturing industry, mining sector, the role and development of the tertiary sector, and concludes with closing remarks. The economic condition of the Special Region of Aceh continued to improve, as evidenced by the quite encouraging growth of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Furthermore, inflation was kept under control, not exceeding single digits. Regarding foreign trade, in 1996, the value of exports increased by 0.66 percent compared to the previous year, while the value of imports rose by 49.89 percent compared to the previous year. The agricultural sector still plays a significant role in the economic system of the Special Region of Aceh. Its contribution to the GRDP (excluding oil and gas) in 1996 ranked first. Agricultural production in the Special Region of Aceh continues to increase. Thus, the report highlights the roles, growth, and production of major economic sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, mining, and the tertiary sector, providing a basis for significant economic improvement in the Special Region of Aceh in 1996.
