Two Decades of Deforestation in Aceh: From Forest Loss to Declining Prosperity

Aceh is facing an invisible crisis—the loss of forests that have long been a natural bulwark against disaster. In the last two decades, deforestation has become a chain trigger that accelerates environmental degradation, exacerbates the frequency of disasters such as floods, landslides, forest fires and droughts, and deepens the poverty gap in the most vulnerable areas. This book reveals how forest loss not only damages ecosystems, but also shakes the economy and community welfare. With strong empirical data, relevant theory, and case studies from the most affected areas, this book presents an overview of the links between deforestation, increasing disaster risk, and the socio-economic crisis in Aceh.More than an academic study, this book is a warning and a call to action. By understanding the patterns and impacts, readers are invited to see that protecting forests is not just an environmental issue, but also an important strategy in preventing disasters and caring for community welfare. An essential read for academics, policy makers, and anyone who cares about Aceh's future and environmental sustainability.
